District 7 has many bars, however, due to the size the area, pubs and bars are spread out and sometimes they not easy to find. To help the denizens of District 7 locate spots to kick back with friends and an adult beverage, we’ve put together a list of eight great places to enjoy in the district.
1.Saigon Craft — 68 Lý Long Tường
Saigon Craft is almost a traditional European style pub, but with a bit of a more upscale feel to it. At the front of the bar is a stage at which live music acts frequently perform, and the picture windows covering the walls give the space an open, breezy feel even when no events are going on there. The location, while not quite isolated, is very quiet and offers a nice respite from the usual hustle and bustle of HCMC.
The drink menu is extensive with 28 craft beers on Tap and some creative concoctions like the “rum-o-nut,” a rum-infused fresh coconut juice. The food menu is also affordable (think $5-9 for an entree) and is excellent. Saigon Craft is a non-smoking bar and has a nice outside terrace for relaxing with friends on an evening.
2. Ruby Soho — 7 Phạm Văn Nghị
Ruby Soho is a cool little joint located smack-dab in the center of the Korean area of Phu My Hung. The drinks they serve are delicious and reasonably priced, but what really steals the show here is the decor — the bar is decorated with an interesting mix of propaganda and 20th century Americana. The musical selection is also great, and that combined with the eccentric surroundings creates a great atmosphere for a night of fun.
3. Pitchers Sports Bar and Grill — Riverside Apartment Block C, Nguyễn Lương Bằng
Pitchers is another great District 7 bar, located on the far side, near the Canadian School and is is one of the best sports bars in HCMC. Large LCD screens that port Western sporting events are scattered around the seating area, and the bar is well stocked for beers, cocktails and wines. The food menu has a good mix of western and Asian dishes. I personally recommend the 1kg tomahawk steak.
The seating area is perfect for families and friends to enjoy an afternoon or evening. There is also a pool table and sports-heavy decor in the main bar area that scream “guys night out.”
That’s not all. Pitchers also has a beautiful, air-conditioned wine-room to enjoy some of the best wines Saigon has to offer.
4. Lost Boys Hideout — 147 Lê Văn Lương
Lost Boys is true to its name in that it is well-hidden down an alley in a less-traveled part of District 7. Don’t let the unremarkable alley entrance fool you, though: this place is as atmospheric as any other bar and restaurant you are likely to find in the city. It has a rustic, jungle-themed interior with mood lighting, fountains, and greenery to amp up the vibrant mood. They have large screens on which they play football matches or other important sports events. It’s a great place to come for the evening, and you are almost guaranteed to make a return trip if you are looking for somewhere chilled-out to hang out in one of the great District 7 bars.
It’s not expensive either and the food here is fantastic. Lost Boys is just as much a restaurant as it is a bar.
5. The Tavern — R2-24 Hưng Gia 3
The Tavern is Phu My Hung’s longest established Pub and is well-known throughout the expat community. This venue doesn’t put on airs, pretending to be an upscale restaurant. It looks exactly like a down-to-earth, European style pub, and that’s exactly what it is. It serves classic alcoholic drinks and dishes out some fantastic pub food including arguably Saigon’s best Sunday roast dinner. The efficiency with which it does both of these things have made it a favorite for city dwellers not just in District 7, but in the entirety of HCMC.
Because of its classic, down-home atmosphere, The Tavern PMH is a great place to catch a football (soccer) match.
6. Coolabah Bistro — Happy Valley Block L, R15, Nguyễn Văn Linh
Coolabah is located in Happy Valley, a huge apartment complex in Phu My Hung. Residents of the apartment building make up a large part of its customer base, but Coolabah has been attracting more and more people from around District 7 recently because it does its job so well. The decor inside is bright and airy, and the outdoor patio is absolutely stunning. The atmosphere is quiet, but it’s a great place to hang out while catching the football match or celebrating a small event with friends.
Coolabah also serves food, and reviews rave about its quality. It’s not the cheapest place in the district, but it uses the highest quality ingredients to deliver the best dining experience possible.
7. Malt South, Greenview – 35 Nguyen Luong Bang
Malt South is a Craft Beer Bar with a unique tapas and classic American/Western food menu. Recently, they introduced a BBQ menu which is worth the the trip over for that alone. Malt South is located just on the other side of Phu My Hung at the Green view apartments.
If TV sports are not your thing then why not give shuffleboard, steel tip darts or ring toss a go inside the bar.
8. The Confidant Bar – R4-22, Hung Gia 1 , Phu My Hung , District 7
Confidant bar is located near all the Korean restaurants in Phu My Hung and offers something different to the usual western style pub grub most expat owned places serve. They have an extensive Singapore menu which attracts both expats and locals alike. The food is of an excellent standard at very reasonable prices.
The Confident has a great area for darts upstairs and there’s usually someone sitting at the bar willing to give you a game.
