Thao Dien is a fast developing District located about 10-15 minutes from District 1. Thao Dien and the surrounding An Phu Area are very popular with expats due to its community feel and numerous restaurants and cafes. Situated close to the Saigon River this relaxing neighborhood is much sought after by new expats.
There are many luxury apartments and a few shopping malls nearby and the first metro line in Ho Chi Minh City, due to open in 2019 is located here. One dramatic difference between Phu My Hung and Thao Dien is the lack of decent roads and pavements. Thao Dien itself is just one main road, with smaller roads branching off it, during rush hour the whole area can become gridlocked especially around BIS and ISHCMC International Schools.
Food and Drink
One reason for Thao Dien’s popularity is due to the number of restaurants, cafes and eating spots, with many situated along the edge of the Saigon River making it an ideal spot to wind down and relax.
Residents of Thao Dien are spoilt with some of the best restaurants in Saigon. You can find Michelin Starred chefs at l’escale, American BBQ restaurants such as Quan ut ut or enjoy watching the sports and a eating a Sunday roast dinner at the DTwo Sports Pub.

The restaurants in Thao Dien are very family orientated, take for example Snap Café. This popular venue is a favorite with expat and local Vietnamese with young children. There is a large covered area for eating and drinking and a fun playground and sand area for children to enjoy. In addition tothe restaurant and play area, Snap Café has a number of retail outlets, selling clothes, toys, art and more.
Shopping in Thao Dien
There are a number of luxury shopping malls located around Thao Dien, the main one being Vincom Mega Mall. At Vincom, you have many floors of international shopping, an indoor ice skating rink, children’s play area and much more.
The expat enclave of Thao Dien is home to many small and trendy shops and boutiques, aimed primarily to the international shoppers.
International Schools and Medical facilities
District 2 has many choices for educating your children, the main International schools have campuses here; British International School, International School, ISHMIC now has 2 modern campuses located here, European International School and more. There are a number of modern and well equipped preschools such as Eton House and Smart Kids.
Along with a few government owned hospitals and clinics, Family Medical Centre and the American International Hospital also have a large modern clinic here. The nearest main hospital is Vinmec, which is a 10 minute drive.
District 2 is a favorable location for many expats and their families to live. This vibrant district is well-known for its high-standard of living and upscale restaurants and is only 15 minutes to district 1. Thao Dien is also known for it’s large villas with private swimming pools, secure compounds and luxury apartments. Prices start from around 600 USD for a 2 bedroom apartment all the way up to 3500+ USD for a house with a swimming pool. There are also many serviced rooms in the area and these can start from 400 USD a month.
